September 11th

by Elizabeth Rooney

Many profound moments of my adult life have involved St. Teresa’s parish.

My birthday is September 11th. On the first anniversary of the 9/11 attack on our country, I asked my brother how I could possibly celebrate my birthday. He suggested that I be creative with my birthday candles. And so I was.

Fr Hoffman said a commemorative mass that evening. A parishioner (who was in one of the towers on 9/11 ) read Psalm 23 during mass. At its conclusion, people walked out of the church into the night greeted by my “birthday candles”. I had set out luminaria to line our church sidewalks. They burned brightly continuing all through the night. Christ is our light. St. Teresa’s parish is a place where we get to experience  it.
